Artificial Intelligence and the Eye

Mr. James Neffendorf and Professor Tom Williamson, Consultant Ophthalmologists at London Lauriston Clinic, were recently invited to a conference at the Royal Society of Medicine on the subject of Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), Digital Health, and the Eye. The Keynote Speaker was Professor Geoffrey Hinton, who has been referred to as the ‘Godfather of A.I.’

This multidisciplinary conference was a fascinating update on the expanding role that A.I. will play in clinical medicine over the coming years. There are already A.I. solutions being used in many areas of medicine such as radiology and image reporting. The potential benefit of A.I. for patients with eye diseases is promising and it is highly likely that it will be used for elements of cataract surgery, intra-ocular lens power calculation and retinal scan interpretation in the near future.

Our ophthalmologists are well placed as key opinion leaders in their specialities to shape the direction of A.I. clinical use and be early adopters of the technology for our patients.
