Dr Catherine Lunken

MA, BM, BCh, FRCP Specialist in Diabetes and Lipid Metabolism

Dr Catherine Lunken qualified in medicine from Oxford University following which she obtained extensive experience in both general medicine and cardiology in major London teaching hospitals before specialising in diabetes and lipid disorders.

Her NHS practice is at University College London Hospital where she is the lead for the lipid service in the Trust with a special interest in familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). She is involved in writing the guidelines for lipid management both at the Trust and across London and is principal investigator for several international trials for groundbreaking lipid therapies.

In her practice she sees patients with all types of diabetes and this involves using the latest technology for continuously monitoring blood sugars and also delivering insulin. Prevention and the management of complications is a vital part of this.

She sees patients with inherited forms of raised cholesterol which can include genetic testing if appropriate. She will work with any patient with raised cholesterol to find an effective lipid lowering therapy which suits them and this can include the latest injectable therapies.

She receives referrals from cardiologists, neurologists, and GPs, as well as patients themselves.

The assessment and management of cardiovascular risk factors using the most recent European guidelines is another important aspect of her practice.
