Professor Paul Foster is a highly accomplished Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon with a specialisation in glaucoma. With extensive expertise in his field, his areas of focus include small incision cataract surgery, and medical, laser and surgical management of glaucoma. He holds numerous qualifications and professional memberships, and in 2000 was elected to The Glaucoma Research Society, a prestigious society for the advancement of scientific understanding of glaucoma, limited to 100 members worldwide.
Prof. Foster’s contributions to the field of ophthalmology are widely recognized. He has served on the editorial boards of leading ophthalmology journals, including the British Journal of Ophthalmology, Journal of Glaucoma and the British Medical Bulletin.
As an esteemed academic, Prof. Foster holds various positions at renowned institutions. He is the Theme Leader for Population and Data Science research at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, where he also serves as a Professor of Glaucoma Studies. Moreover, he is an Honorary Consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and joint theme lead for Translational Data Science. Prof. Foster’s research interests lie in the epidemiology, genetics, and clinical management of angle-closure glaucoma, as well as the impact of lifestyle, environment, and diet on glaucoma. He has made significant contributions to the field through his research on the prevention of angle-closure glaucoma by laser surgery and advancements in the diagnosis and management of glaucoma, publishing two landmark clinical trials in the world leading medical journal, The Lancet.
His achievements and influence in the field have garnered recognition internationally. Prof. Foster has been listed in The Ophthalmologist Magazine’s Top 100 Most Influential Ophthalmologists Globally in 2014, 2016, 2023 and 2024. He was ranked among the Top 25 Eye & Vision Researchers in Europe by Lab Times Online, the youngest researcher to be listed. His contributions have been honoured with prestigious awards, including the Alcon Research Institute Prize and the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Prof. Foster obtained his medical training at Nottingham University Medical School and further specialised at the Oxford Eye Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. He also holds a Ph.D. in Ophthalmology from University College London.
