A well-man check-up, also known as a preventive health check-up or annual physical, is a routine examination that men undergo to monitor their overall health and catch any potential issues early. The components of a well-man check-up may vary depending on age, health history, and risk factors, but it often includes the following:

  1. Physical examination
A thorough examination by your doctor to assess general health, including heart rate, blood pressure, weight, and height.
  2. Blood pressure measurement
Monitoring blood pressure is crucial for assessing cardiovascular health.
  3. Blood tests
These tests can include a full blood count (FBC), cholesterol profile, biochemistry profile, thyroid FT4/TSH, TIBC/IRON and other metabolic markers.
  4. Prostate cancer screening
For some men, especially those over 50 or with risk factors, a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test may be recommended.
  5. Testicular examination
Checking for lumps, swelling, or other abnormalities in the testicles.
  6. Colon cancer screening
Depending on age and risk factors, screening for colorectal cancer may be recommended. This can include colonoscopy, faecal occult blood tests, or other methods.
  7. Vision and hearing tests
Assessing sensory functions can be part of the check-up.
  8. Immunizations
Ensuring that vaccinations are up-to-date, including influenza and other relevant vaccines.
  9. Skin examination
Checking for any unusual moles or skin changes that could indicate skin cancer.
  10. Bone density test
For older men, especially those at risk for osteoporosis.

There are many additional blood profiles and other diagnostic tests which may be useful. However, these will be advised at the initial consultation as these check-ups are individualised according to your needs and risk factors.

It’s advisable to discuss your personal health history, family medical history, and lifestyle factors with your doctor to determine the most appropriate components for your well-man check-up.
