Well-woman check-ups are crucial for maintaining women’s health.  They are designed to promote early detection and prevention of common female health problems. These exams typically focus on reproductive health, but they also address overall well-being. There are different options available depending on your individual needs.  Here are some basic checks:

  1. Pelvic examination
A pelvic exam may be performed to assess the health of the reproductive organs, including the uterus, ovaries, and cervix.
  2. Pap smear (Pap test)
This test is often done during a pelvic exam to screen for cervical cancer or detect abnormal cervical cells.
  3. Breast examination
Clinical breast exams are conducted by healthcare professionals to check for any abnormalities or lumps in the breasts. Additionally, self-breast exams may be recommended for women to perform regularly at home.
  4. Mammograms
Mammograms are X-ray exams of the breast tissue and are typically recommended periodically for women, especially as they age, to screen for breast cancer.
  5. Contraceptive counselling
Discussions about birth control options and family planning may be part of well-woman visits.
  6. Screening for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
Depending on individual risk factors and sexual activity, STI screenings may be recommended.
  7. Bone density testing
For postmenopausal women or those at risk of osteoporosis, bone density tests may be recommended to assess bone health.
  8. Blood pressure measurement
Regular monitoring of blood pressure is important for overall health, including cardiovascular health.
  9. Update on immunizations
Review and update of vaccinations, including those related to HPV and other preventive vaccines.
  10. Discussion of menstrual health and menopause
Discussions about menstrual health, menopausal symptoms, and hormone replacement therapy (if applicable).
  11. Blood profiles screening
Lipid profile, Biochemistry, Full Blood Count, Vitamin D,CRP, Folate, TIBC/IRON, Thyroid FT4/TSH. Besides cervical cancer screening, discussions about risks and potential screenings for ovarian, uterine, and other cancers may be included.

There are many additional tests which could be required however your GP/Consultant will request some of these, if needed, based on your initial consultation.

These visits provide an opportunity to address any health concerns, receive guidance on preventive care, and discuss family planning and overall well-being. The frequency of well-woman check-ups may vary based on age, health history, and individual needs, so it’s essential to follow the recommendations of your GP/Consultant.
